SCAT ! This is not a game.

Lars found this one yesterday just off Finns Rd dividing the northern and southern portions of Delaney Complex in Stow/Harvard.  It was near the bottom of a kettle hole between two wetlands. There were no surrounding tracks to be found in the remnants of snow.  Ideas?

Oh, and S.C.A.T. is a real game.  Doesn't anyone check these things...

  1. Looks like deer doo-doo to me.

  2. Yep, I think it's deer doo, too. It's clumpy like that when they've been feeding on moist, rich vegetation, typically in spring and summer. In winter when they're eating twigs, buds, and bark, the scat is in discrete pellets, which is probably what you're used to seeing. So this is not what you normally see in winter, but maybe this deer was able to find some succulent vegetation, in this mild weather.

  3. It occurs to me that this is the first time you've posted a photo of scat, Lars, am I right? Not that it's anything, but some people are scat people and some people are not. I had you pegged as a not, which, quite frankly, always puzzled me, given that your vocation involves due consideration of bodily secretions and excretions. But lo, here you are talking scat. Now all is consistent, and my sense of order in the universe has been restored. Thank you.
